Task: Create a trial-centric hyper-local fashion e-commerce app

Scenario: The fashion e-commerce companies like Myntra today offer the choice to the user from lakhs of items but they also face issues in returns due to the product not being according to the expectations of the user. There is a new hyperlocal fashion e-commerce app in town. This app shows you limited products but you can order those products and they will be at your home for trial in the next 1 hour. They charge you a mere Rs. 30 as the trial fees. In case you buy the product, the fees get adjusted in the price.

Scope: Design the product detail page, cart screen (where some products have been added for trial), and the post-request journey screens (product being delivered, choosing the product post-trial, etc.)

Understanding the Problem

The e-commerce market faces a major problem of RTO (Return to Origin). The products that are undelivered to their intended address (due to any reason) or the products that are returned by the customer back to the seller (due to any reason) are covered under RTO. In India, the average range of RTO is roughly 20%, which may vary by the product category. The fashion & Apparel category has a higher RTO rate as compared to electronics (a major reason for this could be fashion products have factors such as size mismatch, color difference, fabric quality, etc.)

Reducing RTO is crucial for e-commerce businesses because it reduces profit margins due to return processing costs and lost sales. Strategies like accurate product descriptions, and size charts, can help reduce RTOs.

Another way could be to provide a trial experience to customers at their place before they pay for the product.

Consider it as a hybrid model of online commerce and offline commerce: Shortlisting the products from the app and getting the trial room experience from the comfort of their home.

This strategy will work best when applied at a hyper-local level to address the issue related to return processing expenses. Some pre-known shortcomings of operating at a local level include limited inventory and a limited customer base.
